The College English Department  mainly provides public foreign language teaching for non-English major undergraduates. At present, there are 42 teachers in this department (1 professor, 11 associate professors, and 30 lecturers). Under the department are two teaching and research offices, one is responsible for course teaching, the other for testing and competitions. In addition to the basic teaching tasks, the two offices have also undertaken several other teaching-research-related tasks, including department-based collective teaching preparations, competitions and testing improvement research. All these efforts are aimed at enhancing the quality and efficiency of teaching, learning, testing and research, so as to ensure the development and sharing of high-level teaching resources.

In order to better implement the talent cultivation task set for the general goal of the university and meet the needs of professional accreditations from other schools in the university, this department has arranged creatively a diversified and multi-level college English teaching system based on the graded teaching mode in accordance with the Guidelines for College English Teaching (version 2020) issued by the Ministry of Education, so as to enforce the transition from general English teaching to cross-cultural communication and specialized English teaching. The teaching department has also led in organizing three special teaching teams, which are general English (2), general English (3), and general academic English, respectively. The main purpose is to design excellent courses and improve teaching quality.

The classes of General English Courses aim to develop students’ fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, integrated with the basic knowledge of society, culture and sciences. The curriculum arrangement is to broaden students’ international horizon, improve their comprehensive cultural literacy, and promote their capacity in handling various English proficiency exams such as CET-4 and CET-6, Graduate School Entrance Examination, IELTS, and TOEFL. The classes of General Academic English Courses are designed to cultivate students’ interdisciplinary English proficiency, including skills in listening to lectures, note-taking, delivering presentations, understanding foreign language materials in their fields, writing literature reviews and course papers. Additionally, the coursework aims to cultivate students’ critical thinking ability, facilitate professional learning in English, encourage their engagement in academic research, and promote international academic exchanges and communication skills

In the coming future, this department will continue the ongoing reform of college English teaching, implement the “Progressive Improvement Plan” for CET-4 and CET-6 with a focus on enhancing scores and the passing rate, and comprehensively improve the non-English major undergraduates' skills in English listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, as well as their skills in cross-cultural communication and academic English writing and communication. At the same time, the department will continue exploring the unique values of ideological and political education in college English courses, and redouble its efforts to cultivate multi-talented professionals who are patriotic and competent to tell Chinese stories and disseminate Chinese culture in English.
